Scenic highlights are the main bathing lakes\u00a0W\u00f6rthersee<\/a>,\u00a0Millst\u00e4tter See<\/a>,\u00a0Ossiacher See<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Faaker See<\/a>\u00a0as well as a variety of smaller lakes and ponds. In winter Carinthia offers\u00a0ski resorts<\/a>\u00a0such as the\u00a0Nassfeld<\/a>\u00a0near Hermagor,\u00a0Gerlitzen<\/a>\u00a0mountain,\u00a0Bad Kleinkirchheim<\/a>,\u00a0Flattach<\/a>, and\u00a0Heiligenblut<\/a>\u00a0at Austria\u2019s highest mountain, the\u00a0Grossglockner<\/a>\u00a0as well as the\u00a0Hohe Tauern<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Nock Mountains<\/a>\u00a0national parks<\/a>\u00a0for all kind of alpine sports and\u00a0mountaineering<\/a>.<\/p>

Bad Kleinkirchheim is a municipality and\u00a0spa town<\/a>\u00a0in the district of\u00a0Spittal an der Drau<\/a>, in\u00a0Carinthia<\/a>,\u00a0Austria<\/a>.<\/p>

Nassfeld is a popular sport destination for winter and summer sports which include\u00a0skiing<\/a>,\u00a0snowboarding<\/a>,\u00a0cross-country skiing<\/a>, mountain\u00a0hiking<\/a>\u00a0and offers more than 1000\u00a0km of hiking trails. The area has 30 ski lifts: 5 Gondolas, 4 Six-Seater Chairlifts, 4 four-seater chairlifts and 17 tow lifts. The ski resort has over 220 snow machines for creating artificial snow and 110\u00a0km of ski tracks. The\u00a0cable car<\/a>\u00a0called Millennium-<\/p>

Express can lift people to the summit 1919 meters high in less than 15 minutes. The ski resort expands on elevation between 600 and 2000 meters. It has one of Carinthia\u2019s longest runs, Carnia, with 7.6 Kilometers in length. W\u00f6rthersee is Carinthia\u2019s largest lake.<\/p>

Up to today, the Mediterranean climate and the clean, warm waters make Lake W\u00f6rth a popular tourist destination in summer. Although the region around the lake has been termed \u201cAustria\u2019s Monte Carlo\u201d, in recent decades tourism around Lake W\u00f6rthersee has suffered from tough competition from\u00a0package holidays<\/a>\u00a0to cheaper overseas destinations. As a response a number of local businesses have tried to focus on niches such as high quality tourism, family tourism or golf and horse-riding vacations.<\/p>

Most tourists visit the Lake in the months of July and August when water temperatures reach 25\u00a0\u00b0C. A large proportion of visitors return every summer and some own or rent holiday homes along the shore. The vast majority of visitors come from\u00a0Vienna<\/a>, northern\u00a0Germany<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Netherlands<\/a>. The largest\u00a0Volkswagen<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Audi<\/a>\u00a0car show in Europe, the\u00a0W\u00f6rthersee GTi-Treffen<\/a>\u00a0(in English, \u201cW\u00f6rthersee Meeting\u201d or simply \u201cW\u00f6rthersee\u201d), has been held in the lakeside town of Reifnitz (usually in May) every year since 1981.<\/p>

Mass tourism<\/a>\u00a0was decisively promoted by the\u00a0scenic<\/a>\u00a0High Alpine Road (Gro\u00dfglockner-Hochalpenstra\u00dfe) running from Heiligenblut to\u00a0Bruck<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Salzburg<\/a>\u00a0with a branch-off to the Franz-Josefs-H\u00f6he viewpoint. It was built across the historic Hochtor\u00a0Pass<\/a>\u00a0of the Alpine divide between 1930 and 1935 according to plans designed by engineer\u00a0Franz Wallack<\/a>.
